AN EXTREMELY RARE BOHEMIAN PAVISE, RAVENSBURG, circa 1490. |
Of rectangular shape with rounded corners and a deep medial gutter of rounded section formed of wood covered with gessoed canvas. The front decorated with the arms of the city of Ravensburg, in Würtemberg, a city gate with a portcullis, between two turrets crowned with battlements.
Ravensburg became a Free Town in 1267 and joined the Swabian League in 1331.
A similar example is in the Wallace Collection, London (No. 338) and another is in the Kretzschmar von Keinbusch Collection in Philadelphia (No. 284). |
