A Large Bronze Dagger, c. 2000 – 1600 B.C.

2413 v2
2413 2 v2

Item ref: 2413

  • Northern Europe, likely Denmark
  • Bronze
  • 35 cm / 13.8 in

Provenance:

French private collection, acquired in the 1980s

A similar dagger is in the British Museum (Welcome Trust PRB 1964.12-1). A nearly identical sword-hilt to that seen at left here is also preserved in the Wallace Collection (A455), although lacking its blade.

On our example, the blade has a rounded tip and fine incised decoration; it is likely to have been used for sacrificial ceremony.
