Provenance:

Almost certainly from a group of Nuremberg steel pistols ordered for the use of the palace guard of the Venetian Council of Ten

This pistol was likely included in an historic dispersal from the ducal armoury, as evidenced by two pairs near-identical to this pistol in museum collections

Closely comparable examples to this pistol, which bear the same sets of makers’ marks, are today preserved in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice.

Two pairs near-identical to the present pistol are also preserved in the royal armoury in Turin (Nos. 47/48) and the other pair (Nos. 129 and 6439) in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
