A Pair of Flintlock Pistols by Penterman, Utrecht, c. 1695

A Pair of Flintlock Pistols by Penterman, Utrecht,

Item ref: 2959

  • Low Countries, Utrecht
  • Steel, brass, walnut
  • 24.5 cm / 9.6 in

Provenance:

Private collection, United Kingdom

Beneath the externally-mounted cocks each of the actions is engraved PENTERMAN, while the top surface of each barrel is engraved UTRECHT.

This most unusual pair of pistols has cannon-shaped barrels and circular-section action bodies which are each a single brass casting. Their maker was almost certainly Barend Penterman, who after 1684 was the only gunmaker with that surname working in Utrecht.
