This half-, or demi-shaffron, armour for a horse's head, has a plume holder at the brow that would originally have held decorative feathers, often ostrich. Padded fabric or leather lined the under-side for the horse's comfort, remnants of which may be seen at the ears on this example. The verso also shows an earlier inventory number.
